Maths
Purpose
The Norwood Maths faculty is seeking to take part in the international movement towards mastery to improve outcomes for all students in maths via teaching conceptual understanding. Mathematics is the study of logical progression. It equips us with the tools necessary to model, predict and solve real world problems. Mathematical literacy is the largest factor in social mobility. Students need to understand and apply calculations to help evaluate, quantify and predict. Linking to the future, mathematics is the foundation of science, technology, social science, engineering, economics, architecture, philosophy and computing. Practicably applicable and intrinsically beautiful, the study of mathematics both requires and develops boundless creativity, effervescent determination and rigorous self-discipline.

Key Principles
- Adaptive reasoning: What do I expect to happen? Is this working? How can I change this so it will work?
- Strategic competence: What could I do now? What Should I do next?
- Conceptual understanding: Why does it work? How does it link to other concepts? How else can I represent this idea?
- Productive disposition: A willingness of the student to try hard to learn in lesson and at home.
- Procedural fluency: accurately performing a mathematical skill. E.g. multiplying two large numbers correctly.
