Qualification – A-Level

Entry requirements: 7 grade in GCSE Chemistry and Mathematics; or 7:7 in Double Science and a 6 in Mathematics

Description of the course (Overview):

Some of the ideas explored at GCSE will be developed and taken further together with new concepts such as organic and medicinal synthesis; spectroscopic/forensic analysis and the physical interaction of particles.

A level Chemistry builds on knowledge gained at GCSE and answers the questions why and how reactions happen as well as exploring industrial applications and the behavior of a broad range of known elements. Chemistry studies reactions and substances from a biological and physical context as well as a pure Chemistry perspective. Data handling and Maths skills are a focus, alongside logical thinking, scientific writing and the application of processes and knowledge to unfamiliar contexts. The topics covered in year 12: Development of practical skills; foundations in chemistry; periodic table and energy; core organic chemistry. The topics covered in year 13 include everything in year 12 as well as: physical chemistry and transition elements; organic chemistry and analysis.

The year 12 course will be assessed with internal examinations, and transition on to year 13 depends on passing these exams and showing progress has been achieved.

The A level course is assessed with 3 exams at the end of year 13. The course also involves a practical element, but this is pass fail, and is assessed internally. This will not contribute towards a final grade.

  • Medical Route (medicine, veterinary medicine, nursing, biomedical science)
  • Analytical Route (forensics, technician and research work, conservation, engineering, diagnostic medicine)
  • Engineering Route (chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, materials science, civil engineering)
  • Other possible career routes include Law, Architecture, Business, and  a broad array of other paths.
